Mathematizing Story Maps

Can you ignore a good story? Of course not! Students can’t either. Mathematizing routines focus student attention on what is happening in a story. Mathematizing routines also support student sense making, with easy-to-use work mats called Mathematizing Story Maps.

The first sets of FREE maps and stories are available here. Try it tomorrow and you’ll see.

What is Mathematizing?

Mathematizing is a way of thinking about word problems and problems in general. It’s translating problems into meaningful mathematics. Mathematizing emphasizes making sense of what is happening in a problem before jumping to computation to find an answer. Choosing the right operation requires operation sense.

What is Operation Sense?

Operation sense is like number sense, but instead of having a strong idea of magnitude and of number, operation sense is knowing and applying the full range of work for mathematical operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). Someone with great operation sense knows how to translate a problem situation into mathematical notation.
